Downton Abbey is a major motion picture! The film takes the audience into the lives of The Crawley family and their staff. Set in 1927, the family expects a royal visit from King George V and Queen Mary.

Many characters return, among those being Mr. and Mrs. Bates, Lord and Lady Grantham, Lady Edith, Lady Mary, Barrow, Mr. Carson, Mrs. Patmore, The Dowager Countess, and even Henry Talbot, played by Matthew Goode.

A few characters will not make an appearance, however. Lily James, who played Lady Rose, will not be in the film. Because her character moved to New York City, there was no call for her character, she stated to People magazine.

There were stirrings of Dan Stevens making a surprise appearance. He played Cousin Matthew Crawley, however, his character was killed off the show after the actor decided to leave. His appearance for the movie, even in a flashback, won’t happen. Same can be said of Lady Sibyl Crawley played by Jessica Brown Findley. Her character died in season 3 because of childbirth complications.

Downton Abbey Teaser And Behind-The-Scenes

There are new characters in the film. Imelda Staunton plays Lady Bagshaw. Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess and Staunton’s characters will not be fond of each other. Note – That is much like their characters in the Harry Potter films. Staunton played Professor Umbrage, and of course, Smith played Professor McGonagall.

Max Brown from The Tudors and Royals is an addition to the film, as well as Kate Phillips (The Crown, Peaky Blinders), Simon Jones, and others.

A movie tie-in book releases a few days before the opening. On September 17th, the companion book will be available to purchase. The book will have amazing photos, cast and crew interviews, and a forward by head writer and creator of Downton, Julian Fellowes.
